A massive fire that broke out this around 4 a.m. (Belize Time) on historic Newtown Barracks in Belize City completely destroyed Kimmie’s Bar and other buildings immediately next to the establishment sources say.

The fire which raged for hours was fueled by easterly winds from the Caribbean Sea right across from the establishment which presented a challenge for fire fighters and other responders. NBZLive has been reliably informed that there was one fatality as a result of the fire.

Kimmie’s Bar was on the ground floor and upstairs were dwelling apartments. But a rather disturbing story is emerging – according to a sources, the rooms allegedly housed women believed to be sex workers who were trapped in their rooms because they were padlocked in.

A man from the area was reportedly restrained by police as he was attempting to help victims escape the inferno. One woman managed to jump from a window while another who was afraid to jump perished.

Witnesses also say that the response from the National Fire Service was inadequate as a video posted on Facebook by an on-looker demonstrates. Help had to be called in from the unit at the Phillip Goldson International Airport.

NBZLive has confirmed that the owner, only known to us as “Tim” is said “Tim” whose name is linked to human trafficking reports – most recent is the Won Hong Kim passport scandal which involved former Minister of State with responsibility for immigration, Elvin Penner and City Councillor, Eric Chang. Tim, reportedly was an agent in the illegal transaction that resulted in Penner being booted from office in September of last year.

Media have been trying to speak with Tim but he has been avoiding them. No word yet whether police have hauled him in for questioning. We’ll keep our eyes on this one.
